Very imposing and the serene abode of peace and tranquility Sri Shankara Matha in ShankarapuraofBan galore is completing its 1 00 years of religious, socio-cultural activities spreading the message of Advaitha, peace and hu manity in its true sense and spirit. The Jagadguru Sri Sri Sri Sachchidananda Shivanubhava Narasimha Bharathi Maha- swamiji who is considered as an incarnation of Adi Shankaracharya visualised his thought of establishing a Shankara Matha in Bangalore through this and inspired V.R.Madhava Rao and others to erect this grand holy edi fice in the year 1 907. Since then it has been a rendezvous of religious and socio-cultural aerations. The Matha has been catering to the various needs of the devotees under the parental affection showered upon by a galaxy of Acharyas of the past and the present Jagadguru Sri Sri Bharathi Teertha Mahaswamiji. Keeping in tact the hoary tradition of the Sanatana Dharma and with strict ad- herence to the Vedic rituals, solutions are being found out for the contemporary problems and disorders bearing upon the humanity. The Mahaswamiji has been the beacon light for the seekers of peace and knowledge. He himself is a great scholar and a lovely orator. Under his invaluable and highly disciplined steering, the high values of the true Dharma are held aloft. He has always been a source of strength for his devotees in balancing the mundane with the spirituality. We are immensely blessed that after a long gap of about 1 2 years, Jagadguru Sri Sri Bharathi Teertha Mahaswamiji is visiting Bangalore. Humble pranams at his lotus feet. It is also worth noting that the dynamic and vision- ary administrator of the Shringeri Peetha V.R.Gowrishankar has been doing a yeoman service in executing the ideas, thoughts and orders of the Mahaswamiji and rising to the occasion according to the demands of the current trends and situations. Karnataka Kala Sri Dr. M. Surya Prasad. 5 mmmmimmmimmi i'A YU.U Mil/ \l*KIL-2007 The legendary Shankara Matha Adi Guru Jagadguru Sri Shankara-charya estab- lished a living tradition at Shringcri in Karnataka by setting up the Dakshinamnaya Sri Shringeri Sharada Peetha with Sri Sureshwaracharya as his immediate successor. By the strength of his resolve, the Shringcri Peetha to this day shines as a beacon light to seekers of spiritual knowl- edge. The Peetha has produced over the centuries a galaxy of Acharyas in unbroken Guru-Shishya Parampara. They have kept vibrant the unique heritage of India’s ancient wisdom and learning. The place still retains the air of tapovan, where a visitor could seek and attain peace and tranquil- ity. During the years 1 879 to 1912, the Matha at Shringcri was presided over by the illusitrious Jagadguru Sri Sri Sachchidananda Shivanubhava Narasimha Bharathi Mahaswamiji who is considered as an incarnation of Adi Shankaracharya. For 1 2 years from 1 895 to 1 907 the Swamiji lived at Shringeri, all the while thinking of what should be done to check the drifting away of the people of the land from their old moor- ings. To fiilfill the prayers of the Shishyas, the Guru arrived in the city of Banga- lore in the month of February 1 907. At this time it was brought to the notice of His Holiness the urgent necessity of establishing a Matha in Bangalore and consecrating the idol of Sri Shankaracharya there in and indicated that a clean and big area would be made over to the Matha for this purpose. This was accepted by His Holiness who directed Sri V.P. Madhava Rao who was a prominent disciple and the then head of the Government, to get everything ready for the purpose. Sri Madhava Rao chose the area between the newly developed extension of Chamarajpct and Basavana gudi, acquired it and got it suitably cleaned, cleared up and rendered fit forhabita- 6 tion. The materials necessary for the construction of Sri Acharya’s shrine were sent from Madhava Rao’s house and the temple got ready in two week’s time. Surprised and pleased with such enthu- siasm and devoted perfor- mance, His Holiness installed the marble Acharya Mooilhy on Friday, Vaishakha Krishna Dwadashi ofthe Plavanga year ( 1 907 A . D. ) as per the Vedic rituals. The construction of a large and huge Matha began in the follow ing year Keelaka and w as completed in an exquisite manner with special architectural designs. It was inaugurated on 3-2- 1911 in the presence ofdignitaries like His I lighness Sri Krishnaraja Wodcyar, the Maharaja of Mysore. The idea in building the Matha in Bangalore w as to make it the centre of Advanced Sanskrit Studies and to establish a Sanskrit College called 'Bharatiya Gcervana Proudha Vidya- abhivardhini Pathashala.’ Provision was made for free ClNAGRAIII/APRIL-2007 lllllllllllllllllllllll boarding and arrangements for higher studies in the Poorva and Uttara Mecmsas. During the past 1 00 years, the Shankara Matha at Shakarapi.ra, Bangalore has become as inspiring spiritual cultural, educational, literary and religious centre in Banga- lore South and now a befit- ting centenary is being celebrated with the blessings and the divine presence of H.H.Sri Sri Jagadguru Bharathi Teertha Mahaswamiji duringApril- May 2007. Various institutions estab- lished under the aegis of Sri Shringeri Shankara Matha and their activities in the city of Bangalore:- Sri Sri Sri Abhinava Vidya Teertha M ahaswamij i ofhallowed memory, a great saint full of compassion, recognized the need for an institution of primary and secondary education to impart value based education and to prepare children with good character. ‘ Jnanodaya School ’ established under the aus- pices of the Matha provides excellent education from pre- primary to pre-university in a very congenial atmosphere. The children arc trained in our heritage and culture and are inspired to mould them- selves as responsible citizens. 'Jnanodaya School’ is today a premier institution of learning in our city. Quality Health Care Sri Sri Sri Abhinaya Vidya Teertha Mahaswamiji also recognized the need for quality health care facility in the rural areas around Shringeri and his foresight and efforts resulted in the establishment of Sri Sharada Dhanvantri Hospital by the Matha in Shringeri ( 1 979). This institution has been growing from strength to strength and today occupies a prime place as a major health care support facility for many villages around Sltringeri. Sri Sharada Dhanvantri Hospital Sri Sri Bharathi Teertha Mahaswamiji, the present pontiff of the Peetha, took the initiative to extend the health care facilities of the Matha to the needy public of Bangalore. With his blessings, a small wing of Sri Sharada Dhanvantri Hospital of Shringeri was opened in the premises of the Matha in 1995. Sharada Dhanvantri Hospital was started as a small out patient block for the general health treatments. In the year 200 1 , the centre was turned into a Haemodialysis Centre to provide high quality renal dialysis care at very afford- able costs. The facility which started with just 2 machines in the year 2001 , has been expanding at a very fast pace catering to the needs of hundreds ofdialysis patients. Presently the centre has 1 2 machines and on an average 30 patients avail the facility everyday. I library for children To enhance the opportunity for learning and keep pace with the advance- ments, a library for children was started in the year 1 996 with help from the Rotary Club of Bangalore. 'Shankara Rotary Library’ open to children, provides a convenient place to develop their skills. An 'exploratamum’ attached to 7 <;i N\<»R\lll/\PUIl.-2007 centre now provides surgery a new project to help the rural people through their the centre helps the children to have their creative skills honed through model making and the like. Fully equipped with computer and mass media facilities the centre today provides an opportu- nity for the children to browse through the net and lay their hands on infomiation from any comer of the globe. Hippo campus a pro-terminal team interested in learning activities of the children is supporting the centre. Major initiative The year 200 1 marked the beginning of a major initiative in health care by the Matha, through the establishment of a state-of- the-art eye care centre with support from the Rotary Club of Bangalore West. ‘Sharada Rotary Health Care Centre’ holds camps in various rural areas with support from Rotary Clubs and arranges for cataract surgery of the eye patients. Cataract surgery with 10L implementation is done free of cost to all the needy patients. Equipped with two operation theatres and modem facilities, this to nearly 1 50 patients every month. In the short span of five years, this centre has carried out nearly 5000 free surgeries. The centre is recognized by DBCS and also the Canadian foundation as a high quality eye care facility. ‘Sharada Rotary Children Sight Saving Pro- gram’ introduced in 2002, helps to identify eye prob- lems in school children and treat the same. Nearly 27,000 children have so far been benefited from this on- going programme. Vitamin supplements and spectacles are provided free to the children. Dental care A dental section with one chair was opened in the year 2002. Soon the need was felt for more facilities in this area and a state-of-the- art dental chair was added. Today, this dental care centre provides all support to the patients at very special prices. Needy children and economically poor patients get free medical support. The Matha launched ‘ Sharada Rotary Rural Health Care Project’ in 2004. A fully equipped van reaches out to various rural areas to provide dental care and eye care at the door steps of the people. This has been a major service in the aspect of health care for the poor. Greatly enthused by the usefulness of the above health care initiatives, it was thought of widening the activities in this area, which undoubtedly brought laurels to the Matha endearing it to the common man. High quality care High quality cardiac care and diabetic care are the major areas where the facilities are rather inadequate and beyond the reach of the common man. To fill this void ‘Sharada Rotary VIVUS Heart Clinic has been estab- lished in the year 2006. Nearly Rs. 1 crore worth diagnostic equipment includ- ing x-ray, TMT, EOG ECHO etc, have been installed and services are being made available at a 8 Cl NAGRAIII/AI’KIL-2007 very nominal cost. More facilities are being planned in the near future. Special children with autism or other disabilities have always been treated with utmost care by the Math. Awareness about such disabilities, is very low and a need was felt to establish an ‘Information and Resource Centre’ to help the children, their parents, siblings etc, by special educators in the field. This centre opened in June 2006 has been carrying out a lot ofwork and is being hailed as a unique, first time initiative in this country. Stroke management Similarly, patients who have suffered a stroke undergo a lot of physical and mental stress and need moral support. A unique stroke management program has been initiated in this centre with holistic approach to help the patients and their care takers to lead a contented life as useful members of the society. More facilities like physiotherapy. Ayurvedic therapy are provided. It is noticed that a large number of kidney dialysis patients come from the low age group. This means that they have to undergo the treatment for a long time may be several years. Many of them are economically weak also. Awareness, about kidney problems, dialysis, proce- dures, community support for such patients etc, needs to be increased. With this point of view a ‘Kidney care friends circle’ has been formed. Already around 16 patients from this circle are receiving financial support from the Matha. 24-hour pharmacy ‘ Sharada Aushadhalaya’, a 24-hour pharmacy is a new support facility made available to the public of Bangalore by the Matha. Free medicine and other services are being planned to help the poor patients. It has been the wish of our Guruji that our Matha should provide high quality health care to all the needy. Sharada Rotary Health Care Centre with its many faceted activities has been fulfilling this in a credible manner. Women’s Peace League The school was started in 1953 by Smt. Rajam Saraswathi for the all- round development of girls. Since 2004, the school is being run under the aegis of Sri Sharada Peetha, Shringeri. The building of the school which is running classes from 1 to 10 standards exclusively for the girls in the Sharada Math Road, Shankarapura, Bangalore is well equipped with 40 rooms, laboratory, library, play ground, audito- rium etc along with a dedi- cated staff. The school provides mid-day meals with the co-operation of Sri Annapoona Trust. This is one of the schools in Bangalore which does not collect fees from the students. Besides, fee concession, scholarships, uniforms, books etc, are provided for the poor and needy students. Kalpataru Research Institute This was established with the blessings of H.H. This was started about 25 years ago and was later handed over to the Sharada Peetha, Shringeri on 9 th November 1 995 by its Trustees. Now the adminis- tration of the Bhavana is in the hands of the Math. H.H.Sri Sri Bharathi Teertha Mahaswamiji continues to be the chief spiritual and religious patron of the Bhavana.
