Religion provides ihe inspi- ration and opportunity, idea and ideal and the theme and plot. The arts, in their turn, give rejuve- nated life, active audio-visual demonstration and lend flesh and bone, strength and vision, beauty and message, allure and attrac- tion to religion to educate, en- lighten and elevate far-flung masses. Thus it has been a case akin to an enduring, inviolable Hindu marriage | prior to the en- actment of ihe Divorce Act! |. in which the bridal couple take the unbreakable Saptapadi vows. Each helps the other and both draw strength and succour out of the association. It is a case of perfect and most ideal quid pro quo conforming to all the can- ons of law. DY. S. Radha- krishnan has beautifully ob- served: ‘We have had in our country from the time of the Rig Veda down to our own times a long line of torch-bearers, who stress the primacy of spiritual values who point out that even as the human being is above the animal, the spiritual man is above the human. We are not yet; we hope to be. ‘The exponents of pure ab- stract speculation find their way in the minds of men through song and poetry. The poets, sing- ers and saints with their passion- ate devotion to the ideals of beauty, harmony, freedom and aspiration have had the strongest impact on society.' Introduction to Heritage of Tyagaraja. *** Divine Declarations in Bhagavad Gita substantiate in no uncertain manner the primacy accorded to music in religion, nay, that music is the very image of the Infinite. Lord Krishna de- clares: ‘Vedanam Saama Vedosmi’ | Among the Vedas, I am the Sama- Veda| |Chap X-22|. 'The bulk of the Sama- Veda is nothing but musically chanted essence of Rig- Veda, the latter being considered as the most important and ancient of the four Vedas. In Cbandogya Upanishad, Sama Veda has been beautifully glorified. In Sama Veda there is the added joy of music, inasmuch as the sAmans are sung in com- plicated tunes, the melody and rhythm of which arc evidences revealing a mighty art that has been exquisitely developed by our ancients. Through the beauty of the comparison, we may read that Krishna is the Infinite Es- sence tuned to music’, said re- vered Swami Chinmayananda. Again. “Devarsinam ea Naradah. Gandharvanam Chitrarathah’ [Chap. X 26]. [‘Among Divine rishis, I am Narada: Among Gandharvas, I am Chitraratha.'). 4 Swami Chinmayananda mean- ingfully remarks, ‘Perhaps Krishna, himself being a great missionary, entertains great re- spect for musical Narada be- cause of his missionary zeal and enthusiasm. Many are the con- verts whom Narada has won for the Heaven as described in our puranas. A missionary cannot bin feel a comradeship with another working likewise. ‘ And it is to be significantly noticed that (the spiritual immortal) Narada was a master vainika-gayaka and Sri Krishna, the foremost, pioneer- ing flautist! Chithraratha is the best in the celestial choir. The camaraderie openly proclaimed is thus musically ideal, profession- ally (if the word could be par- donably used) comprehensive and complementary and aestheti- cally perfect. The Lord stops not with these but proceeds to de- clare much more to indicate his musical image and divine passion for music and dance. This Bhagawad Gita of the era of the Malta Bharata is far ancient than many of the civilizations of the world. The productive wedding of music and religion even then has been a wondrous phenom- enon most brilliantly highlighted in the best appropriate and dy- namic fashion. The camaraderie is absolute; the coparcenary is il- lumined; and the divine musical image and status are manifest. It is, indeed, the world’s longest enduring partnership! i 1 1 iii 111 1 1 111 1 1 1 1 We need ‘Kaan-sens” There can be no greater discipline than teaching music to children in schools. For, the future generation can equip ii- 1 self with the sufficient knowledge of appreciating the classi- ;al music. In the present day conditions, we need ‘Kuun- sens”(good listeners) rather than “Tansens". A critical audience is important for the growth of classi- cal music, which could come about only when the public Acquired the taste for classical music. We need to train our- selves to appreciate classical music. .only the trained ear can grasp the full significance of music. Most schools in the U.S. taught music in one form or other to students. We must work towards our students in schools picking up the basics of music. A very happy au- gury for the future is that more and more of our young people are taking to music not as a mere pastime but as a serious profession or vocation. The concept of raga could be claimed as India's contri- bution to world’s musicology. In the Indian system there is a great deal of emphasis on the spiritual content of music anti even of treating it as a means of salvation. We are the inheri- tors of a great tradition in music. This cultural tradition should not be allowed to become a stagnant pool. We must add to what we have received and pass on the enriched stream to the next generation. Music, like most other things had al- ways been in a state of change and would always be. Wlvat route the path of innovation should take with respect to Karnatak music is something which the elders and presti- gious music bodies should discuss and provide a lead. Shravya-Chcthana shine plicates a woman-devotee who of the ragas et al. vouched for Young Bharatanatya duo Shravya Vashishth and Chethana Kalluraya, trained by Poornima Ashok were in their fine form in their duet held for the Dept. of Kannada and Culture's Every Wednesday Cultural Evening Programmes at the Nayana auditorium. En- dowed with attractive trails of a successful dancer, both of them performed with perfect understanding and coordination. There was never a dull mo- ment. Praiseworthy anga shuddhi, lively movements of the limbs, notable laya grip, syn- chronizing manodharma and tal- ent marked their duet. The young dancers kept up a crisp laya throughout their perfor- mance. The opening pushpanjali and an eulogy on the Lord of Dance “Aadenamma" (Pha- raz) set an enjoyable tempo. In the Nataraja stut i one was de- lighted by tandava and lasya elements. A peep into the navarasas was also rewarding. The pada varna “Ninne near namminaanuraa Krishna” describes the Leelaas of Krishna and prays Him to bless her. Various episodes were re- enacted in quick succession. The dancers competed with each other to exhibit their best of talent and they reaped high dividends in it. In their individual turns, Shravya did well in nourishing the sentiments of a mugdha nayaki on the basis of a Mohana-pada and Chethana scored in the exposition of vatsalya raga through “Jagado- dharana" (Kapi). The fitting fi- nale came in the form ofSwati Tirunafs Dhanasri ti liana in which both the dancers ex- ecuted nritta of a high order. Needless to say, the danc- ers were benefited to a larger extent by the musical ensemble led by their mentor Poornima Ashok (nattuvanga). Admirable A.P.Rao Veteran vocalist and teacher N.Ananthapadmanabha Rao relived the charm and specility of old world singing in his vocal recital held at the Vijayaranga auditorium under the aegis of the above observation. Excel- lently accompanied by R.Raghuram (violin), B. Dhruvaraj (mridanga) and L. Bheemachar (morsing), Rao sang without extraneous ele- ments. Nor did he indulge in gimmicks to placate the audi- ence. His disciple Archith Bharadwaj who gave a vocal support did pride to his Guru. Navaragamalika varna was a good beginning. ‘Vandisu- vudadiyali’ in Nala raga was tagged with a variety of laya- pcrfect kalpanaswaras. Shyama Sastry’s Yadukula Kambhoji swarajathi, ‘Kamakshi nee padayugame', is a demanding composition. It progresses in the ascending or- der of the ruga’s scale. Rao and Archith sang both the sahitya and swaras in a dignified man- ner. Their voices and manodharma matched with each other. An old-time favourite raga Khamach (‘Brochevarevarura’) fell pleasantly on the ears. After the chittaiswaras was there any ne- cessity of kalpanaswaras? An- 7 other highlight of the recital was the leisurely rendering of the famous Swati Tirunal-krithi ‘Bhavayami Raghurarnam’. Vivacious Vani Young exponent of Odissi Vani Madhav trained under the great Gurus like Guru Deba Prasad, Guru Gajendra Pandc and Guru Sudhakar Sahu rose to the occasion in her short and sweet Odissi performance at the Bangalore branch of Sri Edneer Mutt in Koramangala. Her dance recital was held in connection with Sri Keshavananda Bharathi Swamiji’s 45 lh Chautrmasa vratha. Originally from Orissa, now Vani settle down in Ban- galore and propagate the art of Odissi through her perfor- mances and teaching. She could highlight the Odissi dance style which fol- lows the basic principles of the Natya Shastra tradition and Methodologies of movement described in the Shilpa shastras of Orissa such as Shilpaprakasha and the Shilpasarani . In Odissi the hu- man body is treated in term of the three Bhangas- Samabhanga , Dvibhanga and Tribhanga; along which deflec- tions of the head, torso, and hips can take place. This was amply evident in Vani’s rendition a Mangalacharan (Pahadi/ IT (.1 VUiRAHI/SEIMKMIifc R«2( Ahirbrairav, ektal), an Ashtapadi (“Rase Hari miha vishita vilasam”, mishra Kapi, adtali) and Dashavatara (Kalyani, ektal). Though she seemed to have mastered various aspects of the nritta technique comprising the static positions, the sculptural poses, the manner of covering space and also the manipulation of the metrical cycle through the articulation of the neck, torso and the movement of the lower limbs and to cover space in different directions and to move along straight lines, diagonals, figures of eight and spirals and to shift weight and play the levels, on a couple of occasions I missed precision in tribhanga and chaukas. Nevertheless, she exhibited noteworthy talent in abhinaya. She would do better by sporting a bewitching smile whenever needed during the abhinaya session. The recorded music support was of great utility. Enjoyable Haridasa Sambhrama 'Haridasa Sambhrama’, a day-long programme was suc- cessfully held at Sri Kanyaka Parameshwari temple, Malleshwaram under the joint aegis of Sri Nadajyothi Thyagaraja Bhaiana Sabha and Arya Vyshya Sangha. The lit- erature, music and the contri- butions of various Haridasas of Karnataka were highlighted through lectures and vocal con- certs featuring some of their invaluable compositions. Noted scholar and the executive direc- tor of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavana, Dr. Mattur Krishnamurthy inaugurated the festivity with his enlightening speech. Bannanje Govindacharyu (though it could have been more comprehensive spoke on ‘Haridasa Sahitya — ugama mattu vikasa’), Vyasanakere Prabhancharya (Sangeetha Sahitya mattu Madhwa yathigalu’), Chaturvedi Vedavyasachar (“Vividha Dasavarenyara sooladi, ugabhoga, mundigegalu’ ), T.Sachidevi (‘Sangeetha Trimurthy haagoo nantarada vaggeyakarara mele Haridasara prabhava’), N.Venkateshachar (‘Haridasa Khandakavyagala ondu nota’) and P.S.Geetha (‘Sri Vaishnava, Jaina, Veerashaiva sahitya- sangeethada mele Haridasara prabhava’) threw light on their respective topics with useful information. Veteran vocalist Veteran vocalist Kuroodi Venkannachar not only brought to the fore the essence of pure traditional Kamatak classical music but also enriched the in- herent sahitya bhaava of Haridasa krithis like ‘Sri Gananatha’ (Malahari), ‘Hariye idu sariye’(Narahari Teertha, Kaanada), ‘Idanaa- daroo kodade iddare’ (Kedaragowla, Sripadaraja) and ‘Guru-vamshake namo namo’, a composition saluting all the saints of Madhwa phi- losophy by Vijayadasa in a ragamalika comprising Nattakurunji, Shanmukhapriya, Dhanyasi, Rasikaranjani and Madhyamavathi. Light Classical style Pt.Raghavendra Gudi sang the compositions by Anandateertha, Vadiraja and Prasanna Teertha in a light clas- sical style. His rich voice added spice to his renditions. M.S.Sheela was her usual self in presenting Jagannathadasa (Amba tanaya), Vijayadasa, Mahipathidasa and others in impressive classical ragas. “Endigaadaroo ninna padave gathi’ with a Ugabhoga in Mohana had emotional inten- sity. Vidya regales Young singer M.S. Vidya established an intimate rapport with the audience by rendering ‘Sarojadalanetri’ (Shankara bharana), ‘Sakethanagara’ (Harikambhoji) and ‘Vanda namu’ (Shahana). Prolific Padmanabha With his wonted form and style R.K. Padmanabha sang ‘Gajamukhane’ (Vadiraja, Mayamalavagowla), Vaikuntha vamane (Reetigowla), Lakshmi sobane (ragamalika) and a Bhramarageetha shloka. Impressive Padma Seasoned singer Padma Gurudath surprised the rasikas by singing some quaint krithis which resemble the krithis of Haridasas. ‘Keshavanolumeyu aaguvatanaka’ (Navaroz, Belur Vaikunthadasa), ‘Enu dhanyano naanenu maanyano’ (Todi, Shamasharma), ‘Aarena maaduvaru’ (Kambhoji, Rathna- karavarni), ‘Anugaalavoo dukha’ (Kapi, Shankaradeva’s swaravachana) and a shloka from Nijaguna’a Kaivalya paddhathi. Valedictory R.K. Padmanabha delivered the valedictory address which was followed by a group rendi- tion of compositions in Bhairavi, Kalyani, Kaanada and Suruti drawn of Navarathnamalika. Delectable duo Suneetha and Vanitha, young disciples of Guru Revathi Narasimhan did proud to their mentor with their neat Bharatanatya performance at the Yavanika during the Ankura Nrithyotsava-2005 held under 9 the auspices of the Karnataka Nrithya Kala Parishath. The co- ordination between them was remarkable and the expertise matched with each other. Thus the elaboration of Lalgudi Jayaraman’s Charukeshi varna ‘Innumenmanam’ successfully highlighted their hold over nritta, nrithya and abhinaya. Crisp Keerthana Guru Padmini Rama- chandran’s disciple Keerthana Ravi moved briskly on the stage negotiating a demanding nritta. The Ganesha stuti was followed by a ragamalika varna ‘Swamiye azhaitodiva’. In this she was able to translate the complex jathis into a fine Bharatanatya vocabulary. She scored well in abhinaya also. She evoked the vatsalya rasa through ‘Krishna nec bcgane baaro’. The concluding Mohana Kalyani tillana had some praise- worthy greeva bedhas and charts. Laudable Lakshmi & Poornima Poornima and Lakshmi Srinivasan won laurels for the delineation of Dandayudha Pani Pillai’s Navaragamalika varna, ‘Jagadodharana’ and a krithi by Uttakkadu in Kaanada. The Ratipatipriya tillana by TVG was given a fine airing by the danc- ers. Their successful Guru Dr.Shubharani Bolar lent an in- spiring nattuvanga support. The vocal music support could have been more authentic and per- fect. hMm . mm ;'«SFT N^ituusmi w iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii 3;;A3 SjSSdf O ffSO&Ftf 3;S, 3c2JCQij33C?ej2 ( 33 f 6 c£j 2 3fD3c3) 4i?2oAr30c3 3 jj;3 3 j 2 fA> 3 Q ci>. 3f3S:3; 3;ftf 33cJ;;3__3;3 ^:S; 523 ;fS 3;3 yAA 6C33..2 52tf3 0332 A r -0333; 3-2f3c 3 3 fA -0 • «4 tf3 3;A^? -jAc"3;3 Zi£>2^rj 333J23Q. 52Gj;fS 3;AV ( ei3Qc3;6. 33f 33f OoAre enjoy; 3J233 ’irj^Cw- o f Gj; 6060.
